New York Theatres

 

Some of the best stage shows ever to perform have started on Broadway, or even off Broadway. New York is the mecca for theatre and show lovers. You may need to book in advance before your trip if you want to catch the top shows, but often you can pick up tickets on the day.

Broadway refers to the top running shows that are performed in the big theatres in the Broadway district, Off Broadway are shows and plays that perform in the smaller venues, ones with less than 500 seats. Off Broadway shows tend to be more avante garde and may not suitable for all audiences, so you will need to be aware of the synopsis. Then there is off-off Broadway, dramas and plays done on a shoestring budget that play to audiences who number under 10,. tickets are much cheaper and you will certainly see something different or even outrageous for your money.

Carnegie Hall
Without doubt one of the most prestigious theatres in the world. There are three entertainment spaces here, with the largest being the Isaac Stern Auditorium that seats 2,804 patrons. If you don't get to see a show here you can take a tour of the interior. 156 W. 52nd Street at Seventh Avenue

Ed Sullivan Theater
CBS named this theatre after the legendary host in 1967. This is where David Letterman films his nightly TV shows. 1697 Broadway

Lincoln Centre
This huge performing arts complex covers 16 acres. There are five major theatres here, as well as concert buildings, a library and two outdoor venues. The Lincoln Centre is home to 12 companies including the New York City Ballet, New York City Opera, the Julliard School and the New York Philharmonic. Lunt Fontanne Theater
The Sound of Music premiered here and it still hosts plays and musicals. 205 W.46th Street

Lyceum Theater
This 1903 theatre is one of New York's oldest that is still hosting productions. 149-157 W. 45th Street

Metropolitan Opera House
This opera house is located in the Lincoln Centre and is very distinguishable by its 10 story colonnade. Opened in 1966, it seats over 3,700 patrons and is home to the Metropolitan Opera company and the American Ballet Theatre. 155 West 65th Street

New Amsterdam Theatre
Here you can catch the Lion King in art deco splendor. West 42nd Street, between Broadway and Eighth Avenue

New Victory Theatre
Located across the road from the New Amsterdam Theatre is this classic theatre built in 1899 by Oscar Hammerstein A big budget renovation in 1995 turned it into a children's performance house.

Theater Row
This is a row of five Off Broadway houses that show off broadway productions .410 West 42nd

Town Hall

Radio City Music Hall
This grandiose entertainment venue is one that New Yorkers are most proud of. It first opened in 1932 and underwent a huge art deco renovation in 1979 and reopened in 1999. Radio City Hall hosts musical spectaculars, with one of the highlights being it's celebrated Christmas Spectacular. Located in the Rockefeller Centre. 1260 Avenue of the Americas (212 632 3975)

Winter Garden Theater
You can catch the internationally famous musical Mamma Mia here. 1634 Broadway

New York Night time

As you would expect New York is the city that doesn't sleep, meaning there is plenty to do in the nighttime hours. All types of musical and dance tastes can found in New York. Cabaret is popular, bars and cocktail lounges are great for a quieter drink, nightclubs pump music to the wee small hours, in fact anything goes in New York.

Beacon Theater
You never know your luck but you may just pop in here when the legendary Bob Dylan is performing or some other big rock name. 2124 broadway at W 74th Street, Upper West Side

Bemelmans Bar
If you want to sip a cocktail and relax to piano tunes, this is the best place to come. 35E 76th St at Madison Avenue.

Crobar
One of the biggest and trendiest dance spaces in New york, there is also an art gallery here as well as a lounge and lots of viewing platforms. 530W 28th Street, between 10th and 11th avenues, Chelsea (212 269 9000)

Don't Tell Mama
This bawdy style of cabaret venue offers a rousing good time to everyone who walks through its doors. 363 W 46th Street, between 8th and 9th avenues. (212 757 0788)

Fifty Seven Fifty Seven Bar
If you like your martinis shaken not stirred then head here to this very popular cocktail bar located in the Four Seasons Hotel . 57E57 Street, between Park and Madison Avenue(212 758 5757)

Lenox Lounge
A popular jazz and blues venue located in Harlem. 288 Lenox Avenue, Harlem (212 427 0253)

Oak Room
This elegant cabaret lounge and is located in the Algonquin Hotel. 59 W 44th Street, Central Midtown (212 840 6800)

Rise
Even if you don't want a drink this bar is worth it for the panoramic views of the harbor and the Statue of Liberty. Located in the Ritz Carlton Hotel. 2 West Street. Battery Park City (917 790 2626)

Village Vanguard
