New York by Foot
Walking is good for short distances. A handy tip to note in New york when walking is, twenty north-south blocks equal 1.6km (one mile), and about seven east -west blocks equal 1.6km (one mile).

New York by Subway
The New York Subway has 26 lines. and is the most efficient way to travel around the city. The subway entrances are at street level and you need to descend a staircase to enter the station area. The stations with green globes indicate you can purchase tokens and metro cards, and the red globes indicate that you cannot purchase so you must have a token or card to enter. Most of the lines run 24 hours a day with trains traveling every 2 to 12 minutes depending on the rush hours. Single tickets can be purchased however, the metro cards with multiple rides are better value. Uptown trains head northbound and Downtown trains travel southbound. The conductors call the stops. New York by Bus
Bus lines are identified by letters followed by numbers (M= Manhattan ; Bx=Bronx; B=Brooklyn; Q=Queens; S= Staten Island ). Bus stops are indicated by tall round signs with the bus emblem and route number, route maps are usually displayed here as well. Stops are usually two to three blocks apart and the buses run every 5 to 15 mins. The metro card system can be used on buses as well. (718 330 1234)

New York by Ferry
The Staten Island Ferry runs from Battery Park to Staten Island . The ferry passes by Ellis Island so a good view of the Statue of Liberty can be had, plus the added bonus, it's free.Other ferries are operated by New York Waterway, connect the city with the New Jersey Hudson River Waterfront.

New York by Taxi
It is true, New York cabs are yellow. An important tip to note about New York taxis is that only the yellow cabs with roof medallions showing the taxi number are authorized to pick up people who flag them down on the street. Taxi's can be found outside hotels or the entertainment areas of the city, and transit terminals.

New York by Water Taxi
