Empire State Building

Arriving at the top of the Empire State Building I wasn’t really sure what to expect. Too much time watching movies like “Sleepless in Seattle” had left me with a certain expectation level that this major piece of New York architecture was going to be an unforgettable experience, that this would be a life changing moment. Truth is that this kind of movie-gained expectation level is doomed for failure because I wasn’t meeting the man of my dreams there, I wasn’t meeting anyone. I was just doing the rounds of must-see things in the Big Apple.

However, despite the initial feeling of being underwhelmed at standing on the top viewing platform, I did actually leave the Empire State Building with a feeling that I wouldn’t forget the experience because once I turned my focus from movie magic back to modern day reality, I found that the view was amazing. As I walked around the viewing platform and looked out at the sites below me as far as the eye could see, I not only could identify specific landmarks and buildings but also could see some kind of order to the way the city was created – not to mention upstate, adjoining states and the ocean! At ground level NYC architecture is a little overpowering to those not used to such a volume of high buildings, but from the top of the Empire State Building, NYC gets put back into perspective.

It wasn’t what I expected, based on my preconceived Hollywood, but it’s an experience that I’d recommend to any visitor going to New York, and it’s one of the places that I’ll be revisiting next time I’m in the Big Apple.
